Beloved Children

As a new parent, I find myself worrying, not about the things I used to, but about how I will share the love of Jesus with my child. So that they don’t misunderstand God’s grace or His laws. How can I, a sinner, share the perfect love of Jesus, when I am not… perfect. At a baptism I attended last year, the priest reminded us that baptism is a great reminder that Jesus could do our job as parents so much better than we could. And yet, He has entrusted us with the care (physical, emotional and spiritual) of our child.

Parents, it is your role to teach your children who God is, what He has done for us, and how much He loves us! Thankfully, the church offers you help with that, but it doesn’t want to be your replacement… You should have faith conversations in your house. You should read the Bible with your children and pray with them! You should be an example of a follower of Christ in your everyday life. A parent is one of the most influential people in a person’s life. Saying all this doesn’t mean I think you should be perfect. Only Jesus is perfect! But it does mean that you should be actively engaged in your faith! How do you d

o that? The Bible tells us how,

“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.  And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:1-2

We should imitate God, AKA, do what Jesus would do! This takes intention, maybe some planning, definitely a lot of prayer. So many people expect the church and Christian schools to teach their children about Jesus, but it is your job, so do exactly what you expect the church to do… attend VBS and church activities, read the Bible, pray together, and worship inside and outside the church building. Letting the Words of the Bible speak to you so that Christ is involved in all things in your life; every kickball game, cookout, and grocery store run. It’s scary, but how blessed are we to get to share our faith, our Savior with our children. If this seems daunting, pray to God for guidance, and then you’ve already taken the first step.
