Talk the Talk/Walk the Walk

A pastor once said in a sermon, “Lutherans are really good about talking about talking about Jesus.” Read that again. One more time. To be fair I’m Lutheran which is why this phrase is directed toward Lutherans, but I think that it could be said for most Christians. We read articles about better ways to witness for Christ, teach how to witness for Christ, and practice how to witness for Christ; but how often do we actually talk to others about Christ? Whether that is people you are close with, people you are acquaintances with, or strangers. When I ask myself that question it makes me uneasy, because I know that I don’t talk about Christ to others as often as I should. I mean to, I know how to, I’ve practiced plenty of times and yet I don’t always do it.
Telling others about Christ can be very intimidating. Whether it is to close friends or complete strangers. You don’t want to shove Jesus down their throats but you don’t want them to miss the focus of the message. It can be intimidating because you have to actually talk to people OR you don’t want to be “that” person who is always posting Bible verses on social media. You don’t want to be rejected or ignored. I’ve felt all these ways too. It’s hard to get out of your comfort zone, but it is worth it! There is no right way to talk about Christ, it doesn’t have to be planned but it can be. It doesn’t have to include multiple people, but it can. It doesn’t have to be perfectly worded. By talking to others, or writing a Facebook post, or trying something; anything, you can start a chain reaction. Maybe the person won’t talk to you but they will talk to a friend or google a Bible verse; maybe that is the push they need to seek out Christ. OR maybe they will talk to you, maybe they will ask questions, maybe you will become a Christian friend for them to confide in and help them on their walk with Christ.
When I do tell others about Christ I feel accomplished, I feel joy, and I feel full. I’m not bragging because it is not I who is doing the work. Matthew 10:20 “For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” I know that this is the work Christ has appointed to me. Telling others about Christ is the MOST important thing we can do, besides believing in Christ ourselves. For us to just mention his name to someone could not only change their earthly life, but their eternal life.
As a Christian you should want as many people as possible to come to the knowledge of Christ. Not only that but it is our duty to tell others about Him. Psalms 105:1 “Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done.” Christ is using you to tell others about him. So be embarrassed, step out of your comfort zone and mention grace, or Christ, or the cross. Not only is it doing what you were called to do, but it is glorifying your Father in Heaven. It is worth it. Christ is worth it. So if you know how talk the talk do so, so that others along with you can walk the walk of faith with Christ by their side. Tell others about Christ the best you can. He will help you, He will accomplish his goal.
Matthew 28:19-20
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
